I actually started this in the Eurotunnel terminus waiting for our train (must be a song in there, somewhere), as the plan was, rather than in previous years when I’ve waited until after the trip to do any updates, this time to try to do daily updates. However, as any military historian will tell you: No plan ever survives contact with the enemy! Which is totally proven as here I am, almost 3 weeks months later having a mass update!

I had originally begun to write it as a single posting, however given the length that it quickly grew into, I’ve decided to break it down into daily sections which can be read by clicking the links below (as each day’s posting is uploaded).

Hopefully, you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

Day 1: 31st May

In which Our Heroes head off early travelling 180 miles for a beer; only to find that a “local” beer had followed them all the way there!

Day 2: 1st June

In which our heroes find out about Dambusting, see Spitfires and Hurricanes, drink more beer in a pub unchanged since WW2, see the oldest cathedral in England, eat their first Italian meal of this year’s French trip and finally visit a brewpub to drink more beer.

Day 3: 2nd June

Another day, another brewpub! Then our heroes realise what that little guage on the dashboard with an “F” at one end and an “E” at the other really means; never mind, they are able to end with their second Italian meal and a peaceful night in a brewery!

Day 4: 3rd June

Today, our intrepid travellers prove that SatNavs and detailed maps are no match for French roads! Fortunately, they avoid going over a very large bridge, go back in time to when Men were Real Men, Women were Real Women and no one was over 5 feet high or moved around in anything wider than 4 feet! They get dizzy on a spiral staircase and find out just how expensive France can be when it tries!

Day 5: 4th June

Tired out by their exertions, so far, our heroes take a break for the day with a gentle stroll around town; they spend the evening realising just how many “so bad, they’re good” movies they still need to watch.

Day 6: 5th June

We rejoin our travellers back in WW2 working their way up to a key point in the Battle of Normandy in the company of a veteran who was there. They then (almost) find an airfield and change their plans for the following day.

Day 7: 6th June

Travelling into the “American Sector”, the Dynamic Duo meet a Veteran having a road named in his honour, drink lots of home made alcoholic beverages, eat some wonderful food… and then head south to do it all over again (except the road naming bit… but they do, again, meet a veteran, hand over a log book and drink lots of wine!). Due to a miscalculation, or rather not spotting a lighted window, they narrowly avoid drinking lots of Calvados!

Day 8: 7th June

Our heroes now set off to take lots of photos of a hill in the rain then travel half way across France to take more photos of the rain; then one of them narrowly avoids finding a brewery… the other doesn’t and stays out late!

Days 9 & 10: 8th/9th June

In which our intrepid travellers return to “Blightly”, avoid a funeral, find a brewpub with none of it’s own beer but with an old friend on tap, have a full fry-up in a second University City, find a brewpub with its own beer on tap, travel a few miles and find another, ditto, to end their trip!
