Cricket, Beer and Napoleon

An interesting group of topics for today, to say the least! But first…

Traditions are upheld

Today saw us heading south towards the Channel Tunnel. However, tradition was maintained when we returned to Glyn’s before we’d reached the motorway. He had to double check on a couple of things that he wasn’t sure had been turned off!

Cricket and beer – a British tradition

Then a reasonable journey south accompanied by the commentary of the second Cricket test Match between England & Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan’s finally fighting back after a disastrous first test, & first innings of this one, to attempt to make a go of it. In addition, England’s Captain – Alastair Cook completed his 10,000^th Run in Test Matches. He was the 12^th person to do this & the youngest by a considerable margin. Well done, Alastair.

Lunch was at a pub just into Buckinghamshire & we arrived at our hotel for the night – The Castle hotel, Hythe– around 4pm. Unfortunately, this was too late to do much & too early for food… so we had a beer! Compared to the lunchtime one & the ones that we’d had yesterday, it seemed to be distinctly average.

Visiting Napoleonic defences

We then popped into Hythe (the local town) for some food & a look at the Military Canal & Martello Towers. Both were, both built during the 17- 1800’s as defence against Napoleon, fortunately, they were never saw action. The Martellos were also   used during the Second World War as lookout posts against possible German invasion.
